Alexander Benedict "Ben" Chartier, age 86, of Lynn Street, Munising died peacefully at his home Sunday, July 13, 2008. He was born on March 26, 1922 to Alex and Linda (Zimmerman) Chartier. Ben was a life-long resident of the Munising area. A 1941 graduate of Wm. G. Mather High School, he worked first for the Munising Wooden Ware then for Kimberly Clark Paper mill before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1942. As a World War II Veteran Ben served in both the American and European African Middle Eastern Campaigns before being honorably discharged in 1946 and returning to Munising. There he met and married his wife Jeanne Artibee on September 9, 1953. Ben was a Machine Operator at Kimberly Clark and retired from there in the mid 1980's. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and teaching his kids about nature while walking in the woods.
Ben is survived by is wife of fifty-four years Jeanne, seven children, fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Fr. Chris Gardiner will celebrate Ben's Funeral Mass on Thursday, July 17, 2008 at Sacred Heart Church in Munising at 11:00 a.m.
****** A burial service for Ben will be on Friday, July 25, 2008 at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Fr. Chris Gardiner will lead committal services, and the Alger County Veterans Council will conduct military honors.
