Munising
Alexander "Alex" Ballas, age 77, of 200 W. City Park Drive, Munising, died following a brief illness on Sunday morning, August 23, 2009. He was born on October 15, 1931 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to the late George and Sally (Kurek) Ballas. Alex grew up in Milwaukee and attended South Division High School. On November 21, 1951, he entered into the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, and the United Nations Service Medal with on Overseas Bar. Alex was discharged on August 22, 1953. He married Patsy Kuczynski on May 19, 1956. Alex worked for Allen Bradley in Milwaukee for forty years. During that time, he and his family also had a produce farm. They spent family vacations snowmobiling and fishing in the Upper Peninsula. After retirement in 1985, Alex and Patsy moved to the U.P. and along with their son, owned and operated Thor's Minnow Shack for five years. He and Patsy were married over forty-nine years when she preceded him in death on October 8, 2005. Alex enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and entertaining his friends at the Manor. He was such a fabulous grandfather that his family complimented him calling him a "professional Grandpa."
Alex is survived by his son - Thor Ballas of Munising; daughter - Vicki Ballas and Vinnie Ouellette; grandchildren - Autumn, Via, Van, Damian, and Jennifer; great-granddaughter - Teaghan; brothers - Nick Ballas of Munising and Sam (Phyllis) Ballas of Milwaukee; sister - Peggy (Merle) Ludiman of Milwaukee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A gathering of remembrances with family and friends will be held on Wednesday, August 26, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Lakeshore Manor.
