Alice Marie (Matthews) Radcliffe (January9, 1928- July 28, 2013) Longtime Grand Marias, Michigan summer resident, raised in Grand Marais, Alice Marie (Matthews) Radcliffe, of Joliet, Illinois Passed away on July 28, 2013, in the presence of her family, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Alice was born January 9, 1928,in Waukegan, Illinois, the daughter of Wilbur and Marie (Kallio) Matthews. Alice was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Josephine Kallio and her uncles (Carl, Arthur, Lawrence, Armas, Arvo) Kallio in Grand Marais, Michigan. She graduated from Grand Marais High School in May of 1945. Alice was married to George Edward Radcliffe (deceased- April25, 2003) on December 18,1946 in Joliet, Illinois. Alice and George were married 56 years. Alice was an avid writer, publishing children's stories and poems. She was a longtime member of the Joliet Writer's Group. Alice is a graduate of Joliet Junior College and St. Francis University, in Joliet, Illinois, earning a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Alice was a devoted first grade teacher for twelve years, at Haines Elementary School in New Lenox, Illinois. Alice is survived by her son, George D. (Linda) Radcliffe of Frankfort, Illinois her granddaughter Jennifer L. (John) Bleckiner of Marquette, Michigan, and her grandson George E. Radcliffe of Lisle, Illinois. Alice is blessed to have two great grandchildren Hannah Anne Bleckiner and Sarah Elizabeth Bleckiner of Marquette, Michigan. A visitation will be held at Kurtz Memorial Chapel, in Frankfort, Illinois on Tuesday, July 30 2013, from 3:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. Visitation will also be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 at the First Lutheran Church in Grand Marais, Michigan from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. Pastors Jon and Sharon Babbitt will conduct Alice's funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Grand Marais, Michigan. Donations in Alice's memory can be made to The First Lutheran Church, Grand Marais, Michigan 49839 and/or The Alzheimer's Association.
