Munising Alice H. Stevenson, age 89, of 504 Birch Street, Munising, died early Saturday morning, July 16, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on May 19, 1922 in Hancock, Michigan to the late William and Niama (Waisanen) Niemi. Alice moved to Munising in 1935 and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1940. She then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Northern Michigan University in 1944. Alice started her teaching career in Traverse City for two years before moving back to Munising where she taught for twenty-nine years with Munising Public Schools. She married Garrett "Gary" Stevenson on July 2, 1946 and together they raised their two children. Alice was involved in many community groups and organizations. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge, crossword puzzles, knitting and making her famous "scrubbies" for the Presbyterian Church Bazaar. Alice loved the 4th of July because it meant her family would all be home together. She was a loving, kind, and giving person, who lived a long, full, and independent life. Alice and her witty sense of humor will be missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of sixty-five years - Gary of Munising; children - Susan (Byron) Schopp of Holt, Michigan and Jeffrey (Mary) Stevenson of Marquette; grandchildren - Charles Schopp of Florida, Melissa (Tom) Bennett of Holt, Jeremy (Jennifer) Schopp of Fowlerville, Michigan, Bryony (Tony) Fiori of Holt, Jacob Schopp of Holt, Brett (Jamie) Stevenson of Coleman, Michigan, Kristy (Joshua) Burt of Marquette and Daniel (Jessica) Stevenson of Marquette; step-grandchildren - Rebecca (Michael) Duke of Bronson, MI and Benjamin Bocklund of Marquette; great-grandchildren - Harley, Nicholas, Sylvia, Madeline, Isaac, Gabriel, Nino, Lorien, Vera, Ryker, Jonah, Hailey, Garrett, Parker, Tori, Eliahna, Mason, Sullivan, Eleanor and Theodore; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Sylvia (Harold) Wirkleu and a brother, Edwin (Helvi) Niemi. A memorial service will be conducted by Chuck Tooman on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Munising. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Memorials in memory of Alice may be made to the Alger County Historical Society. The family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff at Marquette General Hospital and Lake Superior Hospice.
