Andrew H. Heinonen, age 58, of Gwinn and formerly of Trenary, died at his home under the loving care of his family and U.P. Home Health & Hospice on Thursday, January 16, 2025. He was born in Marquette, Michigan on October 18, 1966, to the late Thomas and Audrey (Daavettila) Heinonen.
Andrew was raised on the family farm and graduated from Trenary High School in 1985. He attended Michigan Technological University and later transferred to Northern Michigan University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. He was well-read, with a deep interest in history, philosophy, and current events. Andrew was a union carpenter out of Marquette early in his career, which evolved into his becoming a gifted independent contractor known for meticulous work and a professional approach. He appreciated the music of many artists, particularly the talents of Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler and James McMurtry.
Andrew loved the outdoors and was a canoeing and camping enthusiast throughout his life. A week alone on Isle Royale, canoeing the Boundary Waters, and organizing family excursions on the Escanaba River were among his favorite times. Andrew respected our earth by leaving a small footprint. He was a caring brother and a kind, gentle guy who was loved by many. He was settled, at peace, prepared, and happy.
Andrew will be missed by his brothers David (Maureen), John (Tricia), and brother and best friend Kenneth Heinonen; his sister Kathleen Heinonen; nephews Justin, Mark, Karl, and Joseph; nieces Hannah and Emma; great-nephews Jack and Ben; and great-niece Ailie. Andrew is also survived by his aunts Helen Pietila, Ruth Davison, Susie (Paul) Wittenberg, Carol Ryynanen, and Mary (John) Hannus, as well as numerous cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Audrey Heinonen; his brother Daniel Heinonen; sister-in-law Kelly Heinonen; and nephew Dylan Heinonen.
Visiting time with family and friends will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Friday, January 24, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
