Deerton
Andrew Mika, age 79, of Deerton, died following a brief illness on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital. Andy was born on July 15, 1929 to the late Anna and Andrew Mika in Hammond, IN. He was a 1948 graduate of Dyer High School in Dyer, IN. After graduation, Andy entered the Army Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth, NJ and served during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he began working for Republic Steel in South Chicago. In May of 1952, Andy married Adair McDonald. After working for seventeen years as the Supervisor of Supplies (SPD) he retired from St. Anthony Medical Center in Crown Point in 1991. Andy and Adair then moved to the Deerton area to enjoy their retirement. They enjoyed camping across the U.P. taking in what it had to offer. He also enjoyed wood working and creating beautiful crosses with his scroll saw. Andy was also very involved in the community as the Supervisor and Trustee for Onota Township and as a volunteer fireman. He was also very involved with the St. Therese Church in AuTrain where he was a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and head of Church Council.
Andy is survived by his wife of over fifty-six years - Adair; son - Andrew (Barbara) Mika of Crown Point, IN; daughters - Kathy Lea Mika and Mary Phillis Mika of Mandeville, LA; grandsons - A.J. and Jeffrey Mika; brother - John (Dolores) Mika, and sister - Patricia O'Brien. He is preceded in death by parents - Andrew and Anna; and sister - Rosemarie Arent.
Services for Andy will be held at St. Therese Catholic Church in AuTrain on Monday, March 2, 2009. Visitation will be at the church from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Deerton Cemetery.
