Munising

Angelina “Angie” Agnes Mahne nee Stimac, age 97, died on Tuesday, December 3, 2024 under the care of the staff at Medilodge of Munising. Angie was born January 2, 1927 in Munising to George and Julia Stimac. She attended school, worked and raised her family her entire life in Munising. Angie attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and William G. Mather High School graduating with the class of 1945. After graduation, Angie worked on Mackinac Island at the Lakeside Inn when the ferry took passengers across the Straits prior to the Mackinac Bridge. She was married to the late Joseph “Joe” Mahne from Traunik in July 1951. Together they raised four children – Paula, Gary, Julie and Lori.

Angie attended “beauty school” in Marquette in 1950 where she met her first “partner in hair”, Charlotte (Corriveau) Serr. They made Munising beautiful by working together at La Modern Beauty shop above Madigan’s Hardware. Angie went on to establish a thriving beauty salon known as “Angie’s” at which she worked for 40 years. She employed and later gave her business to “the girls” – Janis Ferzacca, Juli Ake, Judy Rautanen, Patty Woods, and Bev Vardon – who helped in making the salon successful.

In addition, Angie and Joe owned the bowling alley in town for a short time changing it from manual pinsetters to automatic pinsetters. They also grew and sold Christmas trees from their farm in Traunik for many years.

Angie and Joe were members of the Traunik Slovenian Club and helped with the annual July Polka dance which was an important part of their social network. They often pulled their camper out to the Kingston Plains to camp and pick blueberries. They spent many weekends at their farm in Traunik tending to a large garden, cutting firewood, or celebrating Thanksgiving. Angie was an avid bowler, having a 260 average in tournament matches and 216 in the Munising League. The bowling team traveled to Hawaii and Las Vegas for competitions. Other travels brought her to Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and many states in the US, including Alaska.

Angie loved to tell tales of her childhood – Prohibition, World War II, the Depression era and when times were hard but simpler.

Angie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law - Lori and Frank Hamilla of Boyne City; her daughter - Paula Knauff of Gaylord; son-in-law - Ron Woldt of Greenvile, Wisconsin; daughter-in-law - Sandy Mahne of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren - Brent (Carrie) Hill, Brad (Megan) Hill, Jenna Mahne, Jessie (Andy) Kanter, Steve Mahne, Madison (Daniel) Schober and Molly Hamilla; great grandchildren - Carter and Ethan Hill and Shaun and Sarah Hill. Angie was preceded in death by her husband Joe, son Gary Mahne, daughter Julie Woldt, son-in-law Paul Knauff, her parents and siblings Catherine Casey, Edna Pierce, Julia Vartti, Dorothy Haynes and Jerry “Red” Stimac.

A graveside service will be planned for the spring of 2025.
