Arnold "Pie" Maki, age 79, of 200 E. Onota Street, Munising, died unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, September 26, 2006. He was born on May 17, 1927 on Munising to the late Eino and Eini Maki. Pie attended school in Rumely. His father died at a young age and as the oldest of his family, he went to work at the Munising Paper Company to help support his family. Pie entered into the U.S. Navy on September 21, 1944. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was discharged on April 28, 1946 at a Seaman First Class. Pie married Reva Rose Johns and they had two daughters. She preceded him in death. Pie returned to the Munising Paper Company in 1947. He worked in various departments including Specialties and Engineering. Pie retired from Kimberly Clark as an oiler. Pie was a member of the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He loved driving his truck all over town and he especially enjoyed his trips to Canada for fishing and hunting.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law - Debbie (Randy) Maki Hudson of Munising and Kelli (Kim) Paquette of Munising; granddaughters - Mellissa Rose Gould, Nancy Amber Halliburton, Shaylee Marie Makinen, Ilyssa Ann Makinen; great grandchildren - Brandon Lee Monroe, Nancy Christen Diana Halliburton, Nevaeh Rose Halliburton; brothers - Leo and Wayne Maki; sister - Helen Huff; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pie was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Trina Lynn Maki, a great-grandson Dillon Joseph Gould, brother Lenhart Maki, and sisters Lila and Viola Maki.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Deacon John Weber will conduct Pie's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel on Saturday, September 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
