Arthur H. Krellwitz, age 81, of Reindeer Run, Christmas, MI died unexpectedly on Friday, November 23, 2012, at his cabin on Grand Island where he loved spending the last thirty-eight hunting seasons with his good friend, Bill Fox. He was born on January 3, 1931 in Hancock, Michigan to the late Clarence and Minnie (Weber) Krellwitz. Art graduated from Houghton High School and then joined the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Art graduated from Michigan Tech with a Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering. On October 23, 1952, Art married Dolores G. Hocking. They lived in Houghton until 1958 when they moved to Warren, Michigan where he worked for Vickers and Hydraulic Power Systems as a Mechanical Engineer. Beginning in 1963, the family spent many vacations in Munising visiting Dolores' father. In 1969, they built a summer home on Grand Island where they would enjoy the beach in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. In 1994, Dolores and Art returned permanently to the Upper Peninsula when they moved to Christmas. They were very active members in the Alger County Sno-Riders Club and of the Munising Bay Boat Club, and Art loved hunting and fishing. Dolores preceded him in death in 1999. Art was instrumental in saving the East Channel Lighthouse, first by installing a seawall and then restoring the actual structure. He put thousands of hours into the project as well as maintenance of the building. It is now in good shape to stand as a lasting memorial to all of his expertise and dedicated efforts on its behalf. Art was Vice Commander of the American Legion and he volunteered many hours there. He was an active volunteer at the Heritage Center. He helped construct the blacksmith shop building, exhibits, and took care of building maintenance and the lawn and trees for many years. Art cleared snowmobile trails on Forest Service Land and also made yearly improvements to the roads on Grand Island's Thumb area. Art was most generous and gave freely of his time to help his neighbors, his friends, and his community. His morning trip to the post office often lasted for hours as he enjoyed visiting around town and a shared laugh or a ribbing from his friends.
Art is survived by his daughters - Christine (Kevin) Lopez of Cedar, Michigan and Catherine Krellwitz of Warren, MI; daughter-in-law - Beverly Krellwitz of Cedar; grandchildren - Cody and Jennifer Krellwitz and Justin, Danielle, and Dylan Lopez; brother - Ralph Krellwitz of OR; sister - Dorothy Ann (Frank) Goodyear of CT; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dolores, son Steven Krellwitz, sister Virginia, and parents-in-law Benjamin and Martha Hocking.
Visitation will be on Friday, November 30, 2012 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct Mr. Krellwitz's funeral on Saturday, December 1, at 12:00 noon at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
