Trenary
Audrey V. Heinonen, age 85, of Trenary, Michigan, died under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice on Saturday afternoon, March 5, 2016. She was born in Waukegan, Illinois to Hugo and Vera (Ulvinen) Daavettila and graduated from Zion-Benton Township High School. She worked briefly in Detroit then returned to the Zion area where she worked as the administrative assistant to the Commander at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center. She married Thomas Edward Heinonen on April 14, 1956.
They both took jobs at the Newberry State Psychiatric Hospital, began their family and moved downstate where Audrey continued to be a homemaker and raise their six children. The family settled in Marquette for 8 years, then moved to Trenary in 1971 where they purchased the Red Owl grocery store which Audrey managed for several years.
Audrey enjoyed being a member of T.O.P.S. and the Chatham Apostolic Lutheran Church. She was a devoted mother remembered for her get-it-done approach, and enjoyed quilt making, crocheting, crossword puzzles and flower gardening. She was especially appreciative of the loving care of her family, particularly that of her son, Ken.
She is survived by her loving husband of sixty years – Thomas of Trenary; their six children – Daniel (Kelly) Heinonen, David (Maureen) Heinonen, Kathleen Heinonen, all of Trenary, John (Patricia) Heinonen of Seattle, WA, Kenneth Heinonen of Trenary, and Andrew Heinonen of Gwinn; grandchildren – Justin, Hannah, Emma, Mark, Karl, and Joseph; great-grandchildren – Jack, Ben, and Ailie; sisters – Ruth Davison of Seattle, WA, Helen Pietila of Detroit, Carolyn Jurmu of Laurium, and Susan (Paul) Wittenberg of Delano, MN; brother – Don (Charlotte) Daavettila of Houghton; in-laws – Leonard Stang, Mary Jean Daavettila, and Verna Daavettila; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Dylan Heinonen, and siblings Dorothy Stang, Paul Daavettila, and Carl Daavettila.
Services will be held at the Apostolic Lutheran Church, 1700 U.S. 41 West in Ishpeming. Visitation will be at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at noon on Wednesday. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. officiated by Roger Kangas. She will be escorted by her six children and interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary.
