August "Gus" Marentette, age 66, of Liberty Street, AuTrain died Sunday morning, July 17, 2011 at his home in AuTrain under the loving care of his family and North Woods Home Hospice. He was born on October 24, 1944 in Ferndale, Michigan to the late Raymond and Myrtle (Barteau) Marentette. Gus graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1962. He served in the U.S. Army Company C, 4th Battalion - 2nd Regiment from 1963 until 1966. In the Army, he met Dick Cushman of Petoskey they continued their close friendship throughout Gus' lifetime. He worked as a Munising City Police Officer under Rudy Korpela before beginning employment at Kimberly Clark. Gus began working at the mill in October of 1978 in the Machine Room and then the Beater Room. In December of 1995, he went to work in the Powerhouse as the Assistant Fireman and then Turbine Operator. Gus retired from Kimberly Clark on January 1, 2004. He had married Patty (Beauchaine) on August 29, 1989 and they were enjoyed spending their time together hunting, fishing, camping and spending their winters in South Carolina. Gus also enjoyed gardening, his garage, and helping out anyone who needed a hand.

He is survived by his wife and best bud - Patty Marentette of AuTrain; daughter - Natasha (Dan Hakkarainen) Moore of Ishpeming; step-children - Pamela (Mike) Hansen of Slater, CO, Lisa (Rich Hart) Steinhoff of AuTrain and Duane (Ashlee) Shotwell of Bluffton, SC; twelve grandchildren - Samantha (Will) Rosas, Patty (Scott) Britton, Katie (Justin) Swajanen, Bobby (Rene) Britton, Ben Haapala, Amanda Steinhoff, Christian, Eric and Brandon Shotwell, Brittany Moore and Madison and Braylon Hakkarainen; eight great-grandchildren - Kaylee, Miya, Victor, Alanna, Andrea, Nicholas, Landon and Madison; sisters - Betty Rousseau of Munising and Pat (John) Klosowski of Munising; brothers and sisters-in-law - Audrey Marentette, Carolyn (Jim) Steinhoff, Diane (John) Maki, Bill Beauchaine, Terry (Margie) Beauchaine, Joe (Karen) Beauchaine, Tommy (Barb) Beauchaine, Randy (Connie) Beauchaine, Cindy (Pete) Selander and Joyce (Preston) Beauchaine; numerous nieces, nephews cousins and good friends in Michigan and South Carolina. Gus was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Myrtle Marentette, brothers Ray and David Marentette and parents-in-law Audrey and Bill Beauchaine.

Services will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct ahis funeral in the funeral home's chapel at 1:00 p.m. The Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the American Legion Post #131 immediately following funeral. Interment will be at the Serenity Pines Cemetery in AuTrain.
