Munising
Barbara Allen, age 67 of Irish Hills in Munising, died on Tuesday evening, December 10, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on February 25, 1946 in Bad Axe, Michigan to the late Anthony and Viola (Yaroch) Baranski. Barb was raised in Port Austin where she graduated from Port Austin High School in 1964. She then attended Central Michigan University, and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education with a double major in Mathematics and Physical Education. Barb married Vernon Allen in 1968. While teaching at Sacred Heart Academy in Mt. Pleasant she continued her education at CMU, and earned a Master's Degree in Mathematics and Specialist in Physical Education. After a few years of teaching downstate, Barb took a job with the Munising Public School System in 1976, the job she still held, after thirty-eight years, at the time of her death. For over forty years Barb was lovingly known as Mrs. Allen to thousands of her students. Barb was a member of the National and State Teachers Associations. She enjoyed gardening, caring for her many beagles over the years, and keeping the official score book for the Munising Mustang's Girls and Boys Basketball Teams.
She is survived by Vernon Allen of Munising, daughter - Cheryl Allen of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, sister - Connie Baranski of Port Austin, Michigan, aunt - Josephine Yaroch of Port Austin; several cousins and brothers and sisters-in-law; and many beloved students and colleagues. Barb was preceded in death by her parents and aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m., and on Sunday, December 15 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Barb's funeral at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in the Spring. Memorials in Barb's name may be made to the Munising National Honors Society or to the scholarship fund that will be established in Mrs. Allen's name.
