Bernice Shelly, age 93, of Shingleton, died peacefully at her home on Saturday, February 21, 2015. She was born on September 23, 1921 in Emerson, Manitoba, Canada to Sheldon and Daisy (Saunders) McPherson. When Bernice was young, her family moved to the States. She grew up in Munising and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. Bernice married Emerson Shelly on June 6, 1939. In 1950, they moved to Detroit and Emerson went to work for Chrysler. After his retirement from the Warren Plant, they returned to the Shingleton area in 1973. Bernice was a homemaker and a member of the Chatham Fair Board, the Homemaker's 4-H, Shingleton Recreation Club, and the NRA. She was also a hunter's safety instructor. Bernice enjoyed camping, reading, caring for her plants and flowers, and attending Bingo. She was also a founding member of the Shingleton Recycling group.
She is survived by her son - Ronald (Alethea) Shelly of Munising; grandchildren - Michele Shelly of Shingleton and Christopher and Caleb Shelly of Munising; great-grandsons - Daniel Long and Michael Robinson of Shingleton; brother - Kenneth (Dorothy) McPherson of Shingleton; sister - Sharen Keeley of Oxford, MI; Sister-in-law - Mrlene McPherson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over fifty-eight years, Emerson who died on August 8, 1997; her son Emerson "Brud" Shelly, Jr.; infant daughter Katherine Marie Shelly; sister Pearl McCollom; and brothers Fred, Edwin, and Orval McPherson.
Graveside services will take place on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 2:30 PM at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising with Pastor Jason LaFlamme officiating.
