Betty G. Kallio, age 87, of M-94 in Chatham, died at her home early Monday evening, March 3, 2014 under the loving care of her family and Lake Superior Hospice. She was born on April 20, 1926 in Marquette, Michigan to the late Andrew and Gertrude (Fleming) Robare. Betty grew up in Munising and graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1944. After graduation, she and some girlfriends moved to Detroit to work in the airplane factories during WWII. Following the War, Betty returned to Munising and went to work at the News Stand. She met Arnold "Arnie" Kallio and they were married on December 27, 1947. Betty was a homemaker and together they raised their children. Arnie's career with the State of Michigan moved the family to Big Bay, Jackson, Moran and then Chatham in 1965. Betty went to work for the Eben School System as a teacher's aide in the Title I program and she was proud of the work that the students accomplished. She loved working with the kids and still enjoyed contact with the students years after her retirement. Betty was an active member of the Sion Lutheran Church where she was a member of the Altar Guild. She was active with the County Fairs in both Alger and Mackinaw Counties and she served on the election board for Rock River Township. Betty enjoyed participating in activities through Arnie's membership in the V.F.W. She and Arnie were married over fifty-three years when he preceded her in death on November 10, 2001. Betty was an avid bowler, she loved to shop and she enjoyed redecorating her home throughout the seasons.
Betty is survived by her five children - Terry (Jackie) Kallio of Kokomo, Indiana, Bruce (Kathy) Kallio of Chatham, Gary (Cindy) Kallio of Rumely, Tom Kallio of Portage, Michigan and Susie (Rodger) Harbaugh of Fenton, Michigan; ten grandchildren - Kurt, Brad, Brenda, Kara, Daniel, Jessica, Ashley, Taylor, Heather and Kristi; fifteen great-grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law - Beatrice Johnson and Harold and Joy Kallio; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents - Gert and Helmer "Carl" Carlson, husband Arnie and brothers Fred and Bob Robare.
Services will be Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Sion Lutheran Church in Chatham. Visiting time with family and friends will be at the church from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct Betty's memorial service at noon. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
