Betty Jean Savola

Betty Jean Savola, age 79, of Trenary, died at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 2, 2015 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on February 29, 1936 in North Delta, Michigan to Orville and Ruby (Shepley) Lockhart. Betty grew up in North Delta and graduated from Rapid River High School in 1954. She married Walter William Savola on September 18, 1954 and together they raised their three daughters. Betty was a homemaker and worked a couple of years in the bakery at Hub's Super Valu. She and Walt took many wonderful trips together. They traveled across Europe, Canada, and hit forty-four of our fifty states. Betty enjoyed reading, working word search puzzles, watching "her" birds at the bird feeders, playing bingo, and spending time with her family. She was a talented knitter and made all of her grandchildren an afghan for their graduation and numerous sweaters and mittens for them all. Betty and Walt were married nearly sixty years when he preceded her in death on May 3, 2014.

Betty is survived by her daughters - Lynn (Bill) Hawley of Chatham, Cathy (Alex) Freberg of Chatham, and Colleen McLachlan of Munising; grandchildren - Jeremy (Terri) Savola, Derek Hawley, Taylor Dandron, Ashley (Mike) Johnson, Alexander Freberg, Vanessa Freberg, Brittany (Mike) Rockhill, and Jade (Anna) McLachlan; great-grandchildren - Kaylee, Evan, Dylan, Jada, Riley, Samantha, Finn, Hunter, Hayden, Hudson, Scarlette, Chevi, and one more on the way; sisters - June Butkovich of Engadine, Janice (Roy) Butkovich of Engadine, Delores (Jim) LaFond of Rapid River, Elaine Zalut of DeFord, MI, and Vickey (Denny) Chandler of Pigeon, MI; brothers - Ken Lockhart of Lawton, OK, John Lockhart of Dowagiac, MI, and Joe (Patty) Lockhart of Caro, MI; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Orville and Ruby, husband Walt, sisters Eileen Timonen and Judy Hranic, and brother Bill Lockhart.

Services will be held on Friday, May 8, 2015. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon. Pastor Jason LaFlamme will conduct Betty's service in the funeral home's chapel at noon. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary and Betty will be escorted by her grandsons, nephews, and grandsons-in-law.
