Carl "Corky" Strand

Wetmore Carl "Corky" Strand, age 88, of Powell Lake, died on Monday, December 16, 2013 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on March 10, 1925 in Munising, Michigan to the late Carl and Grace (Masters) Strand, Sr. Corky entered into the United States Navy in October of 1942, and served aboard the USS Bailey (DD492) in missions across the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged as a Quartermaster 2nd Class in January of 1946, receiving the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with three Stars, American Theatre, Philippine Liberation, and Victory Ribbons. Corky returned home and began an apprenticeship to become an electrician. He eventually started Strand Electric, working well into his eighty's. Corky married Beverly "Babe" (nee Bovan) on May 11, 1984. Corky loved to golf. He was a charter member of the Pictured Rocks Golf and Country Club and continued to carry or pull his clubs up until a year ago. In his younger years, he enjoyed fly fishing, hunting on Grand Island out of the Playboy Club, bowling, and racing Ski-Doo snowmobiles. Corky was a member of the American Legion Post #131, Eden Lutheran Church, and an active advocate to Alcoholics Anonymous. He is survived by his wife - Babe Strand of Powell Lake; children - Bruce (Micki) Strand of Powell Lake, Robert (Beverly) Strand of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Kathy (Tim) Monroe of Munising, and David Strand of West Palm Beach, Florida; grandchildren - Melinda (Mike) Savola, Melissa, Maria, Jason, and Deserah Strand, Martin, Ryan (Heather), and Brandon Bills; great-grandchildren - Maddie and Trey Savola, Drew, Destiny and Camryn Bills; sisters - Judy Cromell of Chatham, Betty (Malcom) Brown of Lost Lake, and Bonnie Winkowski. Corky was preceded in death by his parents, siblings - Gwen (Walt) Hamilla and Ronald (Jeanne) Strand; brothers-in-law - Jerry Cromell and Larry "Winks" Winkowski. Visitation will be on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Eden Lutheran Church from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct Corky's memorial service at 1:00 at the Church. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in the summer where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct Corky's graveside service on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. The American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will also conduct military honors.
