Munising
Catherine J. Raymond, age 100, of 1616 Sand Point Road, Munising, died at 12:31 a.m. on Monday, September 7, 2009 at the Munising Memorial Hospital under the loving care of her daughter, Pat Gibson. Catherine was born to James F. and Anna F. (Gallagher) Minogue in Waukegan, IL on March 19, 1909. She lived in Chicago most of her growing up years and went to school at St. Clement High School. Catherine worked for Illinois Bell Telephone Company for seven years before she married Joseph O. Raymond, son of Nellie and Oriel Raymond of Munising, in Chicago at St. Clement's Parish on December 29, 1932. She moved to Vermilion Point Coast Guard Station where her husband was stationed. They had two daughters, Mary Ann and Patricia. Joseph was in a tragic accident in 1940 and died six months later and Catherine was left alone to raise their two young daughters. When Joseph died, she spent a year in Munising before returning to Chicago to work as a long distance supervisor for Illinois Bell, retiring with thirty-seven years of service. She retained her property at Vermilion Point and later a cabin at Paradise where she spent her summer vacations. Catherine's greatest pleasure was reminiscing about her years at Vermilion Point and how she adjusted to life at such a remote place after being a city girl. She was proud that she maintained that vacation haven for all of the family at her cabin on Whitefish Bay in Paradise. Catherine had resided in Munising for the past ten years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Alger County Historical Society, St. Ita Church in Chicago, Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation, and longtime member of the Telephone Company Pioneers. Catherine was an avid reader and dearly loved her family, always remembering them on their birthdays and special occasions.
