Munising
Charles A. "Chuck" Olson, age 92, of Munising, died on Saturday morning, March 21, 2015 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan. He was born in Munising on November 14, 1922 to the late Harry and Hildur (Oas) Olson. Chuck graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1940, and then went to work for the Ford Motor Company as a machinist. In February of 1943, he entered into the U.S. Army as a volunteer draftee. Chuck received the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for acts of heroism while in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on February 21, 1946. When the War was over, Chuck returned to Munising and married Edna Heribacka on June 1, 1946. Charles began his employment with the Munising Paper Company on September 10, 1946 as a broke handler in the Machine Room and then transferred to the Specialties Department as a sparehand and progressed to operator. In 1964 he was promoted to the Safety Supervisor and in 1971 he was assigned as Safety and Inventory Control Supervisor. He remained on this job until 1974 when he accepted the job of Maintenance Planner in Engineering, the position he held at the time of his retirement in 1984 after 37 years of service. Chuck was a member of the Eden Lutheran Church, the Grand Island Masonic Lodge, and the Ahmed Shrine. He served as a Den Father and Cub Master when his son, David, was in Scouts. Chuck also taught First Aid classes throughout Alger County when he was the Safety Supervisor at the mill. He also served on the Munising School Board and Munising Co-op Board for several years and Marquette Alger Intermediate School District Board. Chuck enjoyed traveling extensively with Edna after retirement and they attended many of the U.S. Army 97th Infantry Reunions. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at camp on Mirror Lake, and wintering in Albuquerque.
Chuck is survived by his wife of over sixty-eight years - Edna Olson; their three children - David (Annie) Olson of Albuquerque, NM, Debbie (Guy) Chaput of Gwinn, MI, and Karen Olson of Iron Mountain, MI; grandchildren - Brent (Jennifer) Olson, Stacey Hunter, Kirk (Nichole) Chaput, Beau (Alice) Chaput, and Aimee Chaput; step-grandchildren - Kym Hughes, Jay Hughes, Natasha Ellison, and Noel Ellison; twelve great-grandchildren; brother - Harry (Ann) Olson of Albuquerque, NM, sister - Gwen McCollum of AuTrain; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Tom (Marilyn) Olson and sister Joyce (Edward) Hill.
Services will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015. Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m. The American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home, The Grand Island Masonic Lodge will conduct a Masonic service following the military honors. Chuck's memorial service will be held at the Eden Lutheran Church in Munising at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.
Chuck's family would like to give a special thanks to the caring staff on One West at Jacobetti (especially Dr. Skendzel, Fred, and Tina), for the outstanding care they provided for both Chuck his family.
