Charles Joseph "Chuck" Schramm, age 84, of Munising died under the loving care of his family and Lake Superior Hospice on Monday afternoon, December 22, 2014 at his daughter's home in Marquette. He was born on July 31, 1930 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin to the late Fred J. and Agnes (Berry) Schramm. Chuck attended St Mary's School and St. Lawrence Seminary. He worked at F. W. Woolworths and in 1951, entered in to the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed throughout the U.S. and throughout his service during the Korean War, he travelled to Alaska, Guam, Hawaii, Philippines, and Wake Island. Chuck went to A and E Mechanic school and specialized on B36 bombers. He then attended Instrument school and became an Instrument Specialist. During his time in the Air Force, Chuck played for three years on the Squadron Base Softball team, playing Class A ball in Spokane, WA. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Chuck went into partnership with his parents in the resort business called Schramm's Resort in Eagle River, WI. While in Eagle River, he also worked in the propane gas business for Skelgas Company. On October 17, 1959, Chuck married Lenore Kleckner at St. Mary's Church in Port Washington, WI. They left Eagle River in 1966 and moved to Munising where he was assistant manager of Skelgas sales in the area. In 1978, Chuck transferred to the Empire Gas Company as manager for the Alger County area. In 1982, he went to work for the Kimberly Clark Corporation, working in several different departments and retired August 1, 1994 from the Specialties Dept. as a Super Operator.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church in Munising and served as Eucharistic minister since 1972 and also helped altar serve. Chuck was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #2084 and was Grand Knight from 1981 - 1983. He was also a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Council #517, serving as Faithful Navigator from 2006 - 2008. Chuck was also a member of the American Legion Post #131.
Chuck enjoyed his time out at camp, even if there was always work to do there. He loved to hunt and fish. During the summer months, Chuck enjoyed working with Mother Earth - especially his garden. When time permitted, he enjoyed reading, working puzzles and Sudoku. He also enjoyed playing cribbage at the Senior Citizens Center.
Chuck is survived by his wife of over fifty-five years - Lenore Schramm of Munising; their sons and daughters-in-law - Thomas and Lisa Schramm of Munising and Gary and Jen Schramm of Waupun, WI; daughters and sons-in-law - Charlene and William Gariepy of Macomb Township, MI, Nancy and Michael Amicangelo of Iron Mountain, and Lori and Scott Balko of Marquette; grandchildren - Courtney Schramm, Jacob, Joel, and Jillian Schramm, McKensey and Blair Gariepy, Madison and Evan Balko, Michelle (Tom) Pauser, Justine (Keith) Burbank, and Jesse (Jon) Lien; great-grandchildren - Eve, Adain, Liam, Carolyn, and Isabella; sister and brother-in-law - Carol and Jack Kirmse of Campbellsport, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and brother Frederick J. Schramm.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. A time of visiting with family and friends will be held during the luncheon following the Mass. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date and the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will conduct military honors at that time. Memorials are requested to be made in Chuck's name to St. Lawrence Seminary or Relay for Life.
Graveside services will be held at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising on Friday, July 31, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. In addition to the committal prayers, the American Legion and Vietnam Veteran Honor Guard will be there to conduct military honors.
