Charles "Chuck" H. Atherton

Charles “Chuck” H. Atherton, age 94, of Trenary, died Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette.  He was born on March 14, 1926 in Corunna, Michigan to the late Delbert and Evaline (Brothers) Atherton.  Chuck’s family moved to the U.P. when he was young, and they settled in Traunik.  In 1951, he entered into the U.S. Army. Chuck served in Korea as a front-line medic with the 629th Medical Clearing Company.  He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star and the United Nations Service Medal.  Chuck was honorably discharged as a Corporal in January of 1953.  Chuck worked for a short time in Berrien Springs before returning to the U.P. to work in the woods with his father.  He married Carol Stine on September 21, 1968, and together they raised their two daughters.  Chuck was a hard worker who did everything he could to provide for his family.  He worked many years with Red Seymour logging across the U.P.  Chuck worked in the woods into his 80’s continuing to cut wood for his family and friends.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and dancing with Carol.  He also loved supporting his kids and grandkids in all they did, showing up to all the games and being their biggest fan.

Chuck is survived by his wife of fifty-two years – Carol Atherton of Trenary; daughters – Randee (Mike) Johnson of Trenary and Dulcee (Mark) Ranta of Marquette; grandchildren – Jesse (Jen Hooper), Jay (Britini) and Raysha Grahovac, and Cole and Brett Ranta;  great-grandchildren – Maverick Aaron and Billy Ann Grahovac; and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings – Sheila (Louie) Yokeum, Delbert (Marion) Atherton, Jr., Vera (Sid) Morin, Kim (Bonnie) Atherton, Virginia (Jim) Tweedale, Doris (Don Rock) (Bob) McConaghy, and Joyce Atherton.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 24, 2020 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m.  Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard at 6:00 p.m. immediately followed by a funeral service conducted by Pastor Daniel Rodriguez. Per Michigan's Executive Order, masks are required to be worn in the funeral home.
