Chester "Chet" Pawielski, age 87, of 1475 Center Street died on Wednesday morning, February 15, 2012 at the Superior Health Haven in Munising. He was born on August 1, 1924 in Munising to the late Stanislaw and Blanche Pawielski. Chet graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII as a Radar Operator Gunner. Chester was involved in battles and campaigns in Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Ardennes. He earned the EAME Theater Medal, Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Good Conduct Medal. Chet married Nancy Carol Olson in 1949 and in 1951, he graduated from Northern Michigan College with a BS in Mathematics. He and Nancy raised five children and he built their home on Center Street. They were married forty-four years when Nancy preceded him in death on October 18, 1993. Chet retired on June 1, 1985 after thirty-four years of employment at Kimberly Clark. Chet loved gardening and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his five children - Debra (Steve) Cromell of Munising, Michael (Jill) Pawielski of Waupaca, WI, Roxane Pawielski of Moose Lake, MN, Steve (Karen) Pawielski of Deerton, and Mark (Yolanda) Pawielski of Santa Cruz, NM; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers - John Pawielski and Tom Pawielski; sister - Justine Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chet was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nancy, sisters Jennie Carlson, Sophie Miller, Adeline Baldwin, Cecelia Schuck, and brothers Joseph, Anthony, and Edward Pawielski. **** A grave side service will be held for Chester on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors. *****
