Claude Ouellette

Claude G. Ouellette, age 83, of Powell Lake - Munising Township, died on Thursday, August 3, 2006 at 8:40 a.m. at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, Michigan. He was the son of the late Lawrence and Claudine (Berkel) Ouellette. Claude graduated from Sacred Heart School and then from Wm G. Mather High School. He was a WWII veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Army November 10, 1943. Claude was stationed in California and the Pacific arena where he served as an aircraft munitions instructor, earning the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific, and Good Conduct Medals. He attended Northern Michigan University for two years, transferring to Michigan State University where he graduated with a degree in Forestry. He married Colleen "Jo" Anderson on June 18, 1943. They were married for over 30 years before she preceded him in death on August 16, 1980. Claude accepted a Forestry position in Bemidji, MN, first with the Iron Range Resources Division and then with the Department of Natural Resources. He worked for over 30 years as a Forester before retiring in 1982. After retirement Claude moved back to his hometown of Munising where he was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus Council and the Munising Senior Citizens Center. Claude's special interests included fishing, golfing, flying model aircrafts, and taking motorcycle trips around Lake Superior.
Claude is survived by his children - Marilyn Miedaner of Maple Grove, MN, Kenneth (Lisa) Ouellette of Castle Rock, CO, and David (Sandy) Ouellette of Woodenville, WA; grandchildren - Derrick Miedaner, Phillip, Jeanna, and Jaclyn Ouellette; brother - Richard (Carol) Ouellette of Florence, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Jo, baby daughter Kathy Ann, brothers Norman, Theodore, Vincent, and Kenneth who was killed during the Battle of Okinawa near the end of WWII.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday, August 10, 2006 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. A combined Knights of Columbus and Parish Vigil Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Friday, August 11, 2006 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. Memorials in memory Claude may be directed to the Knights of Columbus.
