Munising
Cornelius Edward "Ed" Morrison, age 81, of Munising died Saturday, November 13, 2010, at the Tendercare Heath Center in Munising. He was a Christmas baby, born December 25, 1928 in Munising to Cornelius and Julia (Paris) Morrison. Ed graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Wm. G. Mather High School in 1946. Ed served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952 and earned the German Army Occupation Medal. On October 16, 1954, he married Gretta Knox. Ed worked for the Munising Oil Company before he was a Conductor with Lake Superior & Ishpeming Railroad. He retired from the Railroad in 1989 after thirty-three years of service. Ed and Gretta ran the Munising Tourist Park for eight years after retirement. They had many great memories of years around the bonfire. It was there where they taught their family many life lessons and the importance of laughter and family gatherings. Ed also served with the Munising Volunteer Fire Department for thirty-two years retiring as Assistant Fire Chief. He was an avid skier and ski jumper at Suicide Hill in Ishpeming. Ed enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling and he loved working on his "Perfect" woodpile. He was a wonderful grandfather who always teased his grandchildren, served them up snakebites, and always shared his Oreos and Werthers.
Ed is survived by his wife of fifty-six years - Gretta of Munising; nine children - Kathy (Bill) Watson of Whitmore Lake, MI, Larry (Sue) Dunklee of Phoenix, AZ, Ed (Marilyn) Morrison of Marquette, Mary Jo "MoJo" (Jack) Gariepy of Munising, Dick (Mary Beth) Morrison of Columbus, OH, Tim (Annie) Morrison of Munising, Tom (Marsha) Morrison of Munising, Bill (Rita) Morrison of Munisng, and David (Alison) Morrison of Flushing; twenty-two grandchildren - Shelley (Randy), Wendy, Christie (Brian), Janelle (Justin), Derek, Hope (Don), Rhonda (Jerry), Sonya (Norbert), Aaron, Trevor, Robert, Patrick (Vicky), Jennifer (Corey), Kristie, Brook (Derek), Ashley, Chad (Jennifer), Dale, Corey, Brandon, Nicolas, and Elizabeth; twenty-four great-grandchildren - Dylan, Chase, Erin , Emma, Isaiah, Micah, Gwyn, Paris, Reese, Oralia, Emilio, Aden, Brody, Calvin, Allyssa, Dylan, Hattie Sue, Dayne, Duray, Garret, Alyssia, Blaise, Drake, Ember, and one on the way; sister - Lita Joy (Jim) Tallman; sister-in-law - Grace (Irv) Bjerke; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Annie Young and brother Ray Morrison.
Ed's Memorial Mass will be on Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at Sacred Heart Church at 10:30 a.m. Interment will be at Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons - Derek, Trevor, Robert, Patrick, Chad, Dale, Corey, Brandon and Nicolas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Ed to the Alger Centennial Ice Arena for improvements.
