Wetmore
David Peter Schieding, age 68, of Cedar Street in Wetmore, died on Monday, May 19, 2014 in Wetmore, Michigan. He was born on April 26, 1946 in Marquette, Michigan. Dave was the son of the late William and Pauline (Mills) Schieding and was raised in Wetmore. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and then Wm. G. Mather High School in 1965. Dave was a Merchant Marine and sailed on the Great Lakes on an ore boat. He married Sally Methot and together they moved to Detroit where he attended Detroit Barber College for two years and served his apprenticeship in the Detroit area. His two sons were born and they began raising his family. In addition to his barber work, he also worked as a carpenter pouring concrete walls. In the early 1970's, Dave and his family back to Wetmore. Dave went to work with the CETA program which eventually earned him a job with the Alger County Road Commission. He worked many years before retiring as the Equipment Manager and assistant to the engineer. After his retirement, Dave began travelling the world. He worked four seasons in Antarctica where he was a heavy equipment operator and snow removal specialist. His trips there allowed him to dance with the penguins. Dave enjoyed years visiting with friends in Brazil and he met many people and cultures during his travelling abroad. He climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mt. Blanc in France, Glacier National Park Mountain in Montana, Villarrica in Chile, and he attained his highest altitude when he attempted to climb Mt. Aconcagua in Argentina. He enjoyed the outdoors where he kayaked, fished, gardened and landscaped. Dave enjoyed his grandchildren. He cherished their individuality and spending time with them. He took his grandchildren out for driving lessons and his grandsons in Munising were treated to pizza and movie nights where Papa had his pizza crust burned "just right." Dave continued to keep his barber license current and treated many of his grandson's friends to free haircuts and ice cream (when it hadn't been absconded from his freezer.) He was active throughout his life and enjoyed running, exercising and racing his grandsons in 5K races. Dave was also a good cook with a favorite recipe of beans.
He is survived by his sons - John Schieding of St. Ignace and Bill (Amy) Schieding of Munising; granddaughter - Dana Schieding of St. Ignace; and grandsons - Mason and Mitchell Schieding of Munising. Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his grandson Benjamin David Schieding.

A time of visiting with family and friends will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, May 23, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
