Trenary
Dennis Joseph Viau, age 61, of Gilliland Road, died unexpectedly at his home on Saturday morning, September 17, 2011, following a lengthy illness. He was born on July 13, 1950 to the late Ralph and Norma (Savola) Viau in Detroit, MI. Dennis graduated from Trenary High School in May of 1970, and enlisted into the United States Army in June. He served in Vietnam for one year and was honorably discharged in March of 1972. Dennis married Cindy Seymour on April 10, 1976. Once Dennis returned home from the service, he started his work in the woods working as a piece maker, running skid loaders, and driving pulp truck for Jimmy Gerou. He also worked at K.I. Sawyer doing snow removal. Dennis joined the Operating Engineers Local 324 in 1989 and it gave him an opportunity to work all over Michigan and Wisconsin. He enjoyed looking for deer, hunting, fishing, working in his garden, and helping his son take care of the animals at the farm. Dennis's greatest joy was spending time and playing with his grandchildren, and he always enjoyed giving them rides on the four-wheeler.
Dennis is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Mike and Jennifer Viau of Trenary, three grandchildren that were the twinkles in his eyes Olivia, Ian, and Ella; three brothers - Russ (Raeann) Viau of Munising, Terry (Marsha) Viau of Munising, and Kevin Viau of Des Moines, IA; six sisters - Sheila (Wayne) Brown, of Montrose, CO, Paula (Steve) Brown of Minneapolis, MN, Vanessa (Steve) Bailey of Peoria, AZ, Tina Viau of Portland, OR, Julie Viau of Montrose, CO, and Megan Viau of Paradise Valley, AZ; special friend Cindy Essenburg; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many other kids that loved him like a grandpa. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Norma, and brother Brian Viau.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, September 20, 2011at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Pastor Tom Schierkolk will conduct Dennis's funeral at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary, where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Dennis will be escorted by Craig Aho, Walter Savola, Dan Johnson, Russ Viau, Terry Viau, and Marvin Lusardi.
