Munising
Donald F. Gamelin, age 85, of Munising, died on Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at 6:40 p.m. at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. Don was born on July 19, 1924 in Munising to Alphonse and Delima (LaRoche) Gamelin. He graduated from Sacred Heart School and then from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1942. Don served in the U.S. Army from March 18, 1943 until December 15, 1945. He served in Europe and was involved in battles at Po Valley and Northern Apennines. Don earned the EAME Theatre, Good Conduct, American Theatre, and WWII Victory Ribbons. After the War, Don graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's Degree. He worked at radio stations in Florida and Colorado and then moved to Ludington, Michigan where he was employed by the State of Michigan as Liquor Inspector until his retirement. Don was very active in Boy and Cub Scouts in the Ludington area. Because of his hard work, self sacrifice, dedication, and many years of service, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award which is a distinguished service award give to adult leaders who have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council. Following his retirement, Don returned to Munising where he was an active and faithful member of Sacred Heart Church and the Knights of Columbus. Don was a dedicated member of the 4th Degree Knights. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and loved the Fourth of July. Don had a beautiful and positive attitude. He was always cheering people up and trusted that God would take care of whatever would come.
Don is survived by his sister Barb Gamelin of Munising and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Art "Crow" (Burnette) Gamelin, Leo (Marion) Gamelin, Edgar (Ann) Gamelin, Beatrice (Charles) Mikulich, and Louis "Crow" (Agnes) Gamelin.
Visitation will be held on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A combined Parish Vigil and Knights of Columbus service will be held at 7:00 p.m. The Knights of the Fourth Degree will stand honor guard from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, November 23, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
