Trenary Donald R. Kallio, age 77, of Trenary, died on Thursday morning, September 25, 2014 at his daughter's home in Gwinn under the loving care of his family and the assistance of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice. He was born on October 21, 1936 in Trenary to the late Paul and Jennie (Lindfors) Kallio. Don grew up on the family farm and graduated from Trenary High School in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until 1957. He married Verna M. Maxon on January 25, 1958 and together they raised their family in Trenary. Don worked forty-one years at the Trenary Home Bakery. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Trenary. Don was active in the Trenary community and volunteered for many of their functions. He was involved with the Community Youth Center, the Fourth of July celebration, Little League (where he spent many years coaching the area's kids), slow pitch softball, and any time someone from the community needed help. Don and Verna's home was open to generations of kids. He enjoyed trapping and small game hunting, boxing with the Golden Gloves, and he loved to read. Don was an amazing and kind man. He is survived by his wife of over fifty-seven years - Verna of Trenary; daughters - Tammy Kallio of Orlando, FL and Kimberly (Michael) Marchak of Gwinn; grandchildren - Dreama, Angel, Rebecca, Jared, and Bobbie Jo; sisters - Ida Kallio and Ruth (Arnie) Ellsworth; brother Lauri "Vino" (Peggy) Kallio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents, grandsons Jesse, Brent, and Lance Kallio, sisters Esther, Helen, Jennie, and Impi, and brother Arthur. Services will be held at the First Lutheran Church in Trenary on Monday, September 29, 2014. Visitation will be at the church from 11:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. Pastor Allan Johnson will conduct Don's funeral at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery in Trenary where the American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Don's family would like to especially like to thank U.P. Home Health and Hospice and close family friends Michelle Johnson and Holly Maki who helped lovingly care for him.
