Christmas
Doris M. Olson, age 79, of Christmas, died Monday, May 17, 2021 at UP Health Systems – Marquette following a brief illness with her daughter at her side. She was born on February 6, 1942 in Albany, Oklahoma to the late Jim and Hatti (Briscoe) Newton. Doris grew up in Olivehurst, California. While her brother was serving in the Navy, he would come home while on leave and would bring his friend Nels home to visit. On April 23, 1961, Doris married Nels R. Olson and together they raised their two children. The two of them moved around for an adventure first to Fairbanks, Alaska where their son Richard Kieth was born, then to Reno, Nevada where they welcomed their daughter Connie into the family, and finally back to Nels’ hometown of Munising. Doris owned and operated Olson Embroidery. She equipped many high school students with their letterman jackets, softball team jackets, bowling team shirts, and even embroidered over two hundred coats for an entire Navy ship her son was stationed on, all on her own. Doris was also passionate about art, she created many beautiful oil and acrylic paintings that she would share with family and friends and sell at local art shows. She was a great cook and baker and made the most delicious rhubarb pies. Doris was avid Green Bay Packer fan. But above all Doris’ love for her family was the most important in her life.
She is survived by son - Richard Kieth Olson of Madison, IN; daughter – Connie (Don) Gatiss of Christmas; grandsons – Kyle (Jess) Olson of Bush, LA and Josh (Amanda) Gatiss of Cedar Spring, MI; great-grandchildren – Karlee, Jordan, and George; siblings – Cecil (Wanda) Gray of Wheaton, CA and Kathy Kay (George) Gardner of Reno, NV; sisters-in-law – Gail Newton, Barbara Robare, Karen Schmidtman, Patsy Guadagnoli, Carolyn Olson; Brothers-in-law Terry Olson, Jerry Pracey; and numerous nieces and nephews; Doris was preceded in death by her parents – Jim and Hattie; husband – Nels; and siblings – Wendell, Hulon, Gerald, Bill, Jacqueline (Bob), and June (Tom).
