Dorothy M. Champine

January 1, 1921 — February 22, 2015

Munising

Dorothy Marie (nee Tiernan) Champine, age 94, of Munising, died Sunday afternoon, February 22, 2015 at her home while surrounded by her loving family and under the care of North Woods Hospice. She was born in Munising on January 1, 1921 to the late John and Leota (Cremer) Tiernan. Dorothy attended Wm. G. Mather High School through 11th grade when she had to leave school to watch over and care for her six younger siblings while her parents were going to Ann Arbor for her father's medical treatments. She met Louis Noah Champine, Jr., who was stationed at the CCC's Camp AuTrain. They were married on September 14, 1940 and together raised their three children. Louis and Dorothy remodeled their home for many years saving up enough to work piece by piece until they were done. She was a dedicated mother who always found a way to support her children's activities and would volunteer for anything. Dorothy's dedication did not stop at her children. As her mother aged, Dorothy worked very hard to care for Leota's needs and keep her at home with her. She set a wonderful example of love and patience toward her mother. When Dorothy became the one that needed the extra help, her children easily followed the footsteps of Dorothy's example and she was able to stay at home under their care. She was a faithful and active member of Sacred Heart Church where she was member of the Lady Foresters and worked on many funeral lunch committees. Dorothy was also very active in both the American Legion and DAV Auxiliary where she served as Past President. She enjoyed traveling across the United States and took many trips to Florida to visit her children. She also enjoyed daily trips to the Senior Center for 8:00 a.m. coffee klatch.

Dorothy is survived by her three children - John "Jack" Champine of Sarasota, FL, Renee' (Denis) Beauchamp of Sarasota, and Lee (Joe) Paquette of Munising; grandchildren - Mary (Kile) Zuidema, Jon-Paul (Marya) Champine, Deana (Chris) Martinson, Darci (Brady) Ussher, Kathleen (Jason) Lindquist, and JoeyLynn (Brandon) Selling; great-grandchildren - Charlie, Emma, Vivian, Alex, Elliot, Sarah, Niklas, Carly, Matthew, and Karianna; sisters - Colleen (Buck) Perry and Viola Schultz; sisters-in-law - Louise Tiernan, Emily Tiernan, Millie Tiernan, Dolores (Robert) Mouseau, and Frances Garmen; and numerous nieces and nephews.
