Dorothy (Sinervo) Knuttila, age 91, of Candy Cane Lane, Christmas, passed away on Monday evening, October 17, 2011 at Munising Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. Dorothy was born in Munising on December 22, 1919 to Antti and Ellie Sinervo. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family with many fond memories being shared, knitting, cooking, crafting, making cardamom bread for the holidays, picking berries and watching her favorite daily television shows. She enjoyed traveling, making several trips to Finland. Once a year, she had a girl's get away weekend with her family with lots of laughs and shopping. She was full of Sisu and people enjoyed her stories of the past. She was a member of the Eden Lutheran Church and the Alger County Historical Society.

Dorothy is survived by two sons - Paul (Pauline) Knuttila of Christmas and Eugene (Debby) Knuttila of Fernly, NV; six daughters - Betty (Jack) Bunker of Eckerman, MI, Elliy Hammerel of Wheat Ridge, CO, Suzanne (Paul) Horvath of Jenison, MI, Mary (Bill) Hase of Christmas, Terry (Richard) Gatiss of Christmas and Lori (Kent) Bartelt of Cameron Park, CA; one sister - Ebba Ghan of Marquette; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; brother-in-law - Leslie Knuttila of Christmas; and a very close childhood friend - Mary Schroeder of Munising. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of forty-eight years - Waino on November 18, 1986; grandson - Kevin; brother - Eugene Sinervo; sisters-in-law - Dorothy Sinervo and Annie Knuttila.

Services for Dorothy will be held at the Eden Lutheran Church on Monday, October 24, 2011. Visiting time will be from 10:30 a.m. until the service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct her memorial service. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. A fellowship luncheon will take place after the services at Eden.

Memorials in her memory may be directed to the Eden Lutheran Church or the Alger County Historical Society.
