Dr. Alfred "Al" Reich, D.V.M. age 62, of E1999 Gibbs Road, Rumely, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday morning, July 18, 2011. He was born on August 5, 1948 in Dowagiac, Michigan to Alfred and Alice (Koopman) Reich. Al graduated from Marcellus High School in 1966 and on October 13, 1967, he married Carol Lehnus. They worked together so Al could graduate from Michigan State University with his D.V.M. in June of 1974. From 1974 - 1978, he worked as an employee in Lansing and Charlotte, NC. In 1978, they bought a practice in Waynesboro, VA and owned the Reich Animal Clinic in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1981, they moved to Ypsilanti where Al worked as an Emergency Veterinarian and was a member of IVECCS (International Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Symposium.) In June of 1983, they started the Westgate Animal Clinic in Ann Arbor until January of 2001. Partially retired found him 3 ½ years in Keokuk, Iowa and in May of 2009, he and Carol moved to Rumely. In February of 2010, they opened North Rumely Veterinary Services which developed into clinical services and house calls. Al authored the book "Stolen Friend" in 2003 and was a member of the Professional Bow Hunting Society, the Limestone Baptist Church where he taught the adult Sunday school class, and of the Gideons. He enjoyed archery hunting, fishing with his grandson Justice, and spending his time outdoors.

Al is survived by his wife - Carol Reich of Rumely; twin daughters - Betsy Anne (Jason) DeLisle and Betty Lynn (Todd) Heerema all of Grass Lake, MI; grandchildren - Justice Heerema, Axel DeLisle and Brock DeLisle; mother - Alice (Melvin) Sattelmaier of Marcellus, MI; brother - Kurt E. Riech of Dowagiac, MI; sister - Nancy (Lane) Preston of Eau Claire, MI; step-brothers - Ron (Sue) Sattelmaier of Arizona and Clifford (Dee) Sattelmaier of Waklee, MI; step-sisters - Sylvia (Dan) Kist of Michigan City, IN and Kandy (Ron) Dixon of Hartford, MI; brother-in-law -Leon (Gail) Lehnus of Marcellus; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Reich.
Visitation will be held at the Limestone Baptist Church on Wednesday, July 20th from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the Mater Funeral Home in Marcellus, Michigan on Thursday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.and at the Volinia Baptist Church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until noon. His brother, Kurt E. Reich will conduct Al's funeral service at the church at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Charleston Cemetery near Decatur, Michigan.
Memorials in memory of Dr. Reich are requested to the Limestone Baptist Church Building Fund.
