E. Jean Auer, age 71, of Van Meer, MI died, Wednesday, February 19, 2014, at her home under the loving care of her family and North Woods Home Hospice. She was born on April 3, 1942 in Cambridge, Ohio to the late William "Ray" and Neva (Hostutler) Ritchey. She graduated from high school in New Concord, OH in 1960. Jean married John Auer on September 20, 1995 in Munising, Michigan after falling in love with the area and climate and moving there. Together they enjoyed touring all of the scenic areas throughout the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin. Jean was an avid reader of mystery novels, and enjoyed spending time with family, jigsaw puzzles, surfing the internet, working in her vegetable garden, painting, and cooking. She even shared her skills in the kitchen by writing and publishing her own cookbook, Yooper Gran's Best Recipes. Jean was a private and independent person, "She went her own way" in all she did.
She is survived by her husband - John Auer of Van Meer; daughters Jeanette Bauknecht of Grand Marais, MI and Sharon (Scott) Stanfield of Beckley, WV; grandchildren - U.S. Navy FC 3rd Class Andy Bauknecht of the USS Gonzalez, Norfolk, VA, Bradley Bauknecht of Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids, MI, Travis (Candice) Bauknecht of Grand Marais, MI, Michaela Bauknecht of Grand Valley State, Ashley Stanfield, and Tiffany (fiancé Jeremy Schell) Stanfield both of London, KY; great-grandson - Elliott; brothers - Don (Linda) Ritchey of Cambridge and Dave (Shirley) Ritchey of Belleview, FL; sisters - Sharon (Dave) Stillion of Kershaw, SC and Pam Ritchie of Cambridge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her parents.
