Munising
Earl Chaltry, age 94, of 1414 Center Street, Munising, died at 11:05 p.m. on Monday, February 18, 2013 at Marquette General Hospital following an unexpected and brief illness. He was born on February 14, 1919 in Stephenson, Michigan to Joseph and Emma (Revord) Chaltry. Earl grew up in Stephenson and Menominee and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Marinette. He worked in the Menominee area for Ideal Dairy, an electric company, a print shop, and Lloyd's Factory. Earl married Lillian Marie Mech on September 2, 1944. They moved to Munising in 1947 when Earl began employment with Munising Paper Factory. He worked in the Sulphite, Paper, and Technical Departments. Earl progressed to raw materials tester which was the position he held at the time of his retirement from the Munising Mill of Kimberly Clark on January 1, 1982 after completing over thirty-four years of service.
Earl was an extremely active member in the community. He was a member of the Eden Lutheran Church. Earl was a member of the Munising Lions Club and he was Past District Governor of District 10B. He and Lillian enjoyed attending the National Conventions. He was the Lions Representative for the Boy Scouts and he was a lifetime member of the Boy Scouts. Earl was a member of the Grand Island Masonic Lodge where he held the position of Secretary/Treasurer for forty-five years, 32nd Degree Masons, Shriners, and the Munising Chapter 424 Order of the Eastern Star. He was also the Grand Lecturer for the Grand Chapter. Earl was a charter member of the Munising Credit Union and served on the Supervisory Committee. He was a member of the Pictured Rocks Golf Course, Moose Lodge, Senior Citizens Club, and he and Lillian did volunteer work for Easter Seals. They also enjoyed dancing together with a weekly dance club.
Earl is survived by his wife of over sixty-eight years - Lillian Chaltry of Munising; daughter - Melanie Mattila of South Range, MI; grandson - Craig (Mary) Mattila of Cudahy, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law - Earl Mattila; sister - Exilda (Henry) Vennix; brothers - Henry (Victoria), Clifford (Alice), Alphonse (Doris), Paul (Anna), and Thomas (Florence) Chaltry.
Visiting time with family and friends will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Order of the Eastern Star services will take place at 7:00 p.m. and will be immediately followed by Grand Island Masonic services. There will also be visiting time at the church on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until the service time. Pastor Elisabeth Zant will conduct Earl's memorial service at Eden Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 12:00 noon. A luncheon will follow the service.
