Van Meer
Earl Ray Rowley, Sr., age 84, of N7701 H-58, Van Meer, Michigan, died peacefully on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital with his wife at his side. He was born on June 6, 1925 in Van Meer to the late Albert and Ellen (Scarberry) Rowley. Earl worked as a farmhand in Martin, Michigan and then in the woods before entering the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He served in the European and Pacific Theaters and was at Iwo Jima. Following the service, Earl went to work for the Alger County Road Commission as a heavy equipment operator and also served as a Deputy Sherriff Dog Catcher for many years. Earl then went to work for Bacco and retired from there in the early 1980's, and he was very proud to have built bridges for the government on the North American Trail. Earl married Geraldine M. (Sauve) Carl and they enjoyed over twenty-three years together. Earl enjoyed hunting, trapping, picking berries, and he knew where the wild bogs were for bushels of cranberries. He also enjoyed making his family pine wreaths for Christmas.
Earl is survived by his wife - Gerry; children - Tracy (Steve) Chechet of Laurel, Montana, Earl Rowley, Jr. of Shingleton, Alice Sadler of the Detroit area, Newton Wade (Penny) Rowley of Shingleton; step-children - Mike (Cindy) Carl of Caro, MI, Wayne Carl of Columbus, OH, Roy Carl of Grand Rapids, MI, Jane (Earl) Steinhoff, Sue (Mike) Nettleton, Beth Carl, and Mary (Gary) Tweedale all of Munising; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren; twin sister - Pearl; sister - Monnie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, step-daughter Nan Peterson, five brothers and one sister.
Services will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 8, 2009. Visitation time will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will conduct Earl's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Munising Township Cemetery in Wetmore where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Earl will be escorted by grandsons - Ben, John, Mike, Steven, Patrick, and Ian. A luncheon will follow at the Munising Township Hall.
