Edna Irene (Heribacka) Olson

Munising

Edna Irene Olson, age 93, of Munising, died early Wednesday morning, February 27, 2019 at the Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee, Michigan.  She was born on March 21, 1925 in Eben Junction, Michigan to the late Matt and Anna (Maki) Heribacka.  Edna grew up in Eben and graduated from Eben High School in 1942.  She moved to Chicago and worked there before returning home.  Edna went to work for Bill MacNeil in the Superintendent’s office in Eben and then went to work in the office of the Alger County Road Commission in Munising.  She married Charles “Chuck” Olson on June 1, 1946 and together they raised their three children.  Edna continued to work for the City of Munising and served as the City Treasurer and City Clerk.  At the age of thirty-eight, Edna started college and graduated from Northern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s degree in teaching.  She began teaching for the Munising Public Schools in 1967.  Mrs. Olson taught special education, second grade, third grade, and fourth grade at the Washington, Lincoln, and Central Elementary Schools.  She earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education and retired from teaching in 1987.   Edna was a member of Eden Lutheran Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.  She and Chuck enjoyed traveling during retirement, and they especially enjoyed Chuck’s Army reunions of the 97th Division.  They enjoyed their winters in Albuquerque and summers at their camp on Mirror Lake.   Edna and Chuck were married over sixty-eight years when he preceded her in death on March 21, 2015.

She is survived by her three children - David (Annie) Olson of Albuquerque, NM, Debbie (Guy) Chaput of Gwinn, MI, and Karen Olson of Iron Mountain, MI; grandchildren – Brent (Jennifer) Olson, Stacey Hunter, Kirk (Nichole) Chaput, Beau (Alice) Chaput, and Aimee (Quentin Peterson) Chaput; nine great-grandchildren – Alexandra, Jaxon, Brook, Luke and Blakey Chaput, Karissa and Tyler Gibson, and Andrew and Calvin Olson; brother - Edwin (Judy) Heribacka of Florida; sister – Ethel Holmquist of Gladstone; sister-in-law – Nina Heribacka of Munising; numerous nieces and nephews.  Edna was preceded in death by her parents, husband Chuck, brother Edward Heribacka, and brother-in-law Gordon Holmquist.

Edna's memorial service will be on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Eden Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m.  Interment will follow be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising immediately following the service.  The Eastern Stars will conduct a grave side service for Edna before Pastor Ann Gonyea concludes with committal prayers.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Edna's name.
