Eino W. Nummela, age 91, of Rumely, died Sunday morning, March 9, 2008 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette. He was born on June 24, 1916 in Midway, Michigan to Matti and Anna (Maki) Nummela. Eino attended school in Rumely, was raised on the family farm, and was a lifetime Alger County resident. He worked in the woods as a heavy equipment operator for many different woods workers including William Carlson for twenty-two years. Eino served in the U.S. Army from July 23, 1942 until July 18, 1945. He served throughout France and was involved in battles and campaigns at Northern France and Rhineland. He was discharged with the EAME Theater Ribbon with two battle stars and the Good Conduct Medal. Eino was a member of the American Legion and the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time out in the woods.

Eino is survived by brothers - Toivo "Toby" Nummela of Chatham and Urho Nummela of Eben; nephews - Raymond (Carolyn) Nummela of Negaunee and Robert Nummela of Eben; niece - Helen Kangas of Rudyard; and great nieces and nephews - Ryan, Tara, Brenda, Darnell, Dwayne, Mark, Amy, and Lisa. Eino was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Sulo and Onnie Nummela.

Visitation and funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Paul D. Kelto will conduct Eino's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham where the Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors.
