Munising
Eleanor Salminen, age 90, of Munising, died with her loving husband next to her late Sunday evening, January 18, 2009, at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on August 11, 1918 in Chatham to Alexsander and Selma (Juntonen) Matson. She married Elmer Salminen on May 13, 1939. Together they owned and operated a Red Owl Grocery in Chatham from 1942 until 1948. Eleanor was a homemaker and they moved to Arizona in 1965. Eleanor and Elmer loved traveling together. They travelled the U.S. in their motor home and traveled across Europe and island hopped around Hawaii. They returned to Michigan in 1996.
Eleanor is survived by her loving husband of almost seventy years - Elmer of Munising; children - Karen (Hank) Compeau of Queen Creek, AZ, Marsha (Richard) Stanton of Aptos, CA, and Gary (Karren) Salminen of Mesa, AZ; ten grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and brothers - Leslie and George Matson. She was preceded in death by son - Rodney (Laura) Salminen; granddaughter - Corinna Salminen; and brothers - Adolph and William Matson.
Eleanor's visitation will be on Friday, January 23, 2009 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Her funeral will be conducted by Pastor Paul Kelto on Saturday, January 24, at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
