Munising
Elizabeth "Peggy" Johnson, age 89, of Munising, died on Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. She was born on June 14, 1919 in Stillman, Michigan to Charles and Miriam (Knox) Dolan. Peggy graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1937. On December 23, 1939, she married Axel G. Johnson. Peggy worked for the Munising Bakery, as a bookkeeper for Bancroft Dairy for over 20 years, and then at Horseshoe Falls. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she spent many years teaching Sunday school and singing in the choir. Peggy and Axel loved to dance and they participated in the Hiawatha Hillbillies Square Dancing Gang. They had the "Best Club in the U.P." They danced every weekend and traveled all over. They danced for eleven years and had danced at conventions at Cobo Hall, Traverse City, and Green Bay. Peggy and Axel were married over sixty-two years when he preceded her in death on September 10, 2002. Peggy loved crafts, knitting, crocheting, visiting with friends, and taking care of her flower garden. She was also the President of the resident's group at Tendercare.
Peggy is survived by her children - Judith Ann (William) Rousseau of Christmas and Roland Paul (Sharon) Johnson of Munising; six grandchildren - William, Nicole, Stephanie, Dean, Paul, and Lauri; great-grandchildren - Noel, Veronica, Tory, Samantha, Cole, Dean Jr., Shaun, Brian, Alex, Ethan, and Emily; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Axel, infant daughter Sally Marie, and siblings James, Pat, Charlie, and Mike Dolan, Vivian Harrington, Violet Spence, Dorothy Henderson, Gertrude Cornish, and Mariam Fink.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Munising. Rev. Robert Sutherland will conduct Peggy's service. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
