Elmer Salminen, age 99, of Munising and formerly of Chatham, died Monday, December 1, 2014 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising. He was born on November 20, 1915 in Big Bay, Michigan to the late Jack and Hilma (Lehtomaki) Salminen. Elmer married the love of his life Eleanor Matson on May 13, 1939 and together they had four children. They had a wonderful loving relationship; you would rarely see them together without holding hands, or sneaking a kiss. Elmer spent a short time in Detroit working for General Motors while times were tough in the U.P. He then owned and operated the Red Owl Grocery in Chatham from 1942 - 1948. Elmer eventually moved to Arizona where he became a successful real estate agent. He was a hard working supporter of his family. Elmer was a kind and warmhearted man who could talk to anyone, and leave you with a smile with one of his jokes or piece of heartfelt advice. He was a life member of the Masons. Elmer enjoyed traveling around the United States with Eleanor in their motor home, as well as trips to Hawaii and Europe with a special stop in Finland.
He is survived by his three children - Gary Salminen of San Antonio, TX, Karen (Hank) Compeau of San Tan Valley, AZ, and Marsha (Richard) Stanton of Aptos, CA; ten grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren; sisters - Aili (Lou) Praznik and Dorothy Smith; sister-in-law - Bernice Salminen; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Eleanor; son - Rodney (Laura) Salminen; granddaughter - Corinna Salminen; daughter-in-law - Karren Salminen; siblings - Leslie, John, Eimert, Walo "Wally", William, Len, Nestor Salminen, and Helen Cody.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Pastor Paul Kelto will conduct a funeral service at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham.
