Esther Eleanor Martell, age 80, of Marquette formerly of Trenary and Munising, died Monday, March 30, 2009 at Marquette General Hospital. She was born on March 26, 1929 in Trenary to the late Emil and Miina (Glans) Latvala. Esther married to Eugene Ylinen in 1947 and together they raised their children until he preceded her in death in 1968. In 1974 she moved to Munising to help care for her older sister. In 1985 Esther married Gary Martell. They moved to Marquette in 1998. Esther was what her family called a "professional grandmother." She loved spending time with her family. Esther would make pasties and huge turkey dinners whenever the family would be together. She was a caring woman who put others in front of herself. Even in her ill health she would take the trip to Iron Mountain a number of times each week to be with her husband at the VA Hospital.
Esther is survived by her husband - Gary; children - Dennis (Dianna) Ylinen of Manistique, Susan (Mike) Niemi of Negaunee, Darren (Deannea) Ylinen of Battle Creek, and Heather (Dale) Hemmila of Negaunee; grandchildren - Zachary and Jonathan Ylinen, Jason (Johannah) Niemi, Carrie (Mike) Pietila, Barrett (Kim) Niemi, Corin, Quinn, Chance, Kelline, and Rory Ylinen, Davin and Rylan Hemmila, and Tom (Amie) and Mark (Alana) Nolan; great-grandchildren - Chett, Lydia, Raija, and Brody; sister - Gloria Aho of Trenary; and numerous loved and loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents - Emil and Miina; husband - Eugene; granddaughter - Ginny; eleven brothers and two sisters.
Visitation will be on Saturday, April 4, 2009 form 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. Deacon John Weber will officiate Esther's memorial service beging at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Mathias Township Cemetery.
