Eugene A. Koski, age 84, of N4692 Benson Road, Eben, died unexpectedly from a massive stroke on Thursday, February 24, 2011 at 2:10 a.m. at Marquette General Hospital. He was born on April 4, 1926 in National Mine to the late Emil and Lydia (Pietila) Koski. Gene's family moved to Eben Junction and he attended school in Loudspur and Eben. He worked on the family farm and local farms before entering into the U.S. Army on December 29, 1944 and served until November 7, 1946. Gene served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and earned the Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Army Occupation of Japan Medal. After the War, Gene worked at the mines and then began employment with the Soo Line Railroad. Gene married Violette Liubakka on June 26, 1954. They were married over thirty-five years when she preceded him in death on September 24, 1989. Gene was an active member of the Munising Seventh Day Adventist Church and the Ikkala Brothers V.F.W. Post. He enjoyed reading, being outdoors and puttering in the garage. Gene was a very giving man and spent his life helping others. He loved to visit with his family.
Gene is survived by his son and daughter-in-law - Arthur and Faith Koski of Allegan, Michigan; daughters and sons-in-law - Susan and Bill Gillespie of Hamilton, Ohio and Barbara and Paul Ray of Berrien Springs, Michigan; three grandchildren - Katie Gillespie, Zechariah Ray and Rebekah Ray; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Violette, brothers Martin and Leslie and sisters Viola and Evelyn.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Pastor Mike Szynkowski will conduct Gene's funeral in the funeral home's chapel on Monday, February 28, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Chatham. The members of the Ikkala Brothers Post, Alger County Veterans Council and American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military honors. Memorials in Eugene's name may be made to 3ABN Ministry, P.O. 220, West Frankfort, IL 62896.
