Shingleton
Eugene D. “Gene” Long, age 75, of Shingleton, died early Thursday morning, June 1, 2017, at UP Health Systems in Marquette following a brief illness. He was born on December 25, 1941 in Iron Mountain, Michigan to the late Everett and Alice (Anderson) Long. Gene grew up in the Shingleton area and began working in the woods at a young age. He married Alice A. Somerville on October 3, 1970 and together they raised their two children. Gene worked as a logger for many years, until he was hired at Timber Products in 1982. He started working in the veneer mill and then became Watchman, the job he held until he retired in January of 2017. Gene enjoyed camping, fishing, trips to the casino, and spoiling his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of forty-six years – Alice Long of Shingleton; children – David (Kristen) Long of Wetmore and Melissa (Les) Syers of Shingleton; grandchildren – Leslie, Mason, Daniel, Tyler, Kali, Tristin, Keegan, Levi, Camden, and Casen; sisters – Carol (Guy) Matheny of Marlette, MI and Gail Latvala of Ishpeming; brothers and sisters-in-law – Becky (Tom) Bockelmann, Bill Somerville, Johnny Somerville, Katherine (Danny) Slaton, Wanda Wellington, and Frank Cloft; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene was preceded in death by his parents Everett and Alice; brother Ronald Long; mother-in-law – Marjorie Somerville; brothers and sister-in-law – Virginia Cloft, Dennis Somerville and Dar Wellington.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at the Bowerman Funeral Home from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Pastor Ann Gonyea will conduct Gene’s funeral at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. His obituary and online guestbook may be viewed and signed at bowermanfuneralhome.net
