Eva Marie Rautanen, age 87, of Marquette and formerly of Hilltop Road in Munising, died on Friday, December 31, 2010 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Marquette. She was born on December 18, 1923 in Munising to John and Mona (Ripley) Root and attended school in AuTrain. Eva married Arne E. Rautanen on November 25, 1944 and together they raised their six children. They were married over fifty-eight years when Arne preceded her in death on August 31, 2003. Eva did housekeeping for families and then worked at the Munising Co-op. She and Arne had owned and operated Potter's Restaurant. Eva also worked for the Munising Memorial Hospital as an aide and cook for over twenty-two years and retired as head cook in 1985. Eva was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Munising and Bethel Baptist Church in Marquette, D.A.V. Auxiliary, T.O.P.S., and Munising Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Eva loved to travel and she crocheted numerous afghans and beautiful tablecloths for many family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, gardening and baking Swedish rye bread and cinnamon rolls.
Eva is survived by six children - Arnold (Shirlee) Rautanen of Fort Dodge, IA, William (Judy) Rautanen of Nugent Lake, H-58, David (Sandy) Rautanen of Sussex, WI, Marilyn (Ed) Morrison of Marquette, Arlene (Doug) Sertich of Green Bay, WI, and Michael (Paula) Rautanen of Munising; twenty-eight grandchildren - Paul (Shelly) Rautanen, Chad (Lisa) Rautanen, Sheila (Mark) Freeman, Bobi (Jamie) Zeiglar, William (Lillian) Rautanen, Marla Rautanen, Travis Rautanen, Amber (Brian) Stankovich, Ginger Rautanen, Heather (Josh) Curry, Dawn Gilbert, Terra Denner, Brian (Kim) Rautanen, Nicole (Tony) Frank, Mark Rautanen, Hope (Don) Rollins, Rhonda (Jerry) Woods, Sonya (Norb) Cuellar, Aaron Morrison, Trevor Morrison, Robert Morrison, Sean Reasdon, Nadine (Michael) Budzis, Stacey (Brian) Berlowski, Joshua (Shanon) Lake, Augustus (Maggie) Rautanen, Jared (Heather) Rautanen, and Kayla (Joe) Perron-Rautanen ; forty-four great grandchildren; siblings - Audrey Massey of Marquette and Clayton (Marie) Root of Big Bay; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband - Arne in 2003; son - Robert Arne Rautanen in 1946; daughter-in-law Carol Rautanen; siblings - Emma Root, John "Jack" Root, Mary Root, Jimmy Root, Wesley Root, Rhoda Soles, and Evelyn Syers; and three great-grandchildren - Jacob, Menphis, and Jenee.
Eva's visitation will be on Saturday, January 8, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Munising Baptist Church in Wetmore. Her funeral will be conducted by Pastor Brian Oberg and Pastor Hank Steede at 1:00 p.m at the Munising Baptist Church. Memorials in Eva's name may be made to the Faith Baptist or Bethel Baptist Churches, D.A.V Auxiliary, Alzheimer's Association - Upper Peninsula Region, or the American Cancer Society.
