Evelyn Marie Bashaw

June 22, 1927 — June 27, 2015

Evelyn Marie (Huse) Bashaw, age 88, of Munising, was called to her eternal home early Saturday afternoon, June 27, 2015 at the Tendercare Health Center in Munising after fighting a courageous and powerful battle against Alzheimer's disease. She was lifted up out of the pain and into the loving arms of our Lord with her family by her side. Evelyn was born to Asta and George (Kaatorp) Huse on June 22, 1927 in Munising where she remained a lifelong resident. She attended Munising schools and graduated with honors from Munising High School in 1945. In the winter of 1945, she found herself under friendly fire when she and three of her friends engaged in a snowball fight with four young men in the middle of the main street. They may have been able to dodge the snowballs, but they were unsuccessful in dodging the intentions. The results were that all four of the young men married all four of the young women. That is what you call a "snowball effect."

Evelyn married Edward Thomas Bashaw in Munising on November 15, 1947. She evidently captured not only Ed's heart but the hearts of his friends as well because they all agreed to be in the wedding party and remained lifelong friends in spite of having to miss what they considered to be the most important day of the year - opening day of deer season. Evelyn and Ed were married over sixty years and together they raised four children, all of whom consider themselves to be blessed to have been given two such fantastic parents. Ed and Evelyn taught love, kindness, compassion and respect through example each and every day of their lives. Evelyn was a member of Sacred Heart Church. She was employed by Kimberly-Clark Corporation in her younger years before leaving to raise their family. In later years, Evelyn worked as a bookkeeper at Peoples State Bank for many years and retired in 1987. Many special friendships, stories, laughter, and memories were made throughout those years.

Evelyn enjoyed doing almost everything and nothing was out of the question, no matter her age. She enjoyed spending time with her family, playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, coffee klatches with friends who were family to her, listening to music, going to camp, spending time at the beach, playing cards, picnics, playing games, and above all, laughing and sharing laughs. Evelyn shared her God given gift of sharing love and shining her light to all who knew her, even through the most difficult of times. Evelyn's sense of humor and quick keen wit will be remembered by all who knew her and were second only to her compassionate heart and giving nature. She was always willing to put the needs of others first and taught her children by example that being kind and considerate of others is a choice. She made this choice and lived it daily. Thank you Mom for sharing this beautiful gift with us.

She is survived by her son - Tom (Patty) Bashaw of Rhinelander, WI; daughters Karen (Larry) Moore of Remus, MI, Kim (Jim) Monette of Munising, Kay (Chuck Deaver) Bashaw of Munising; grandchildren - Ryan (Leanne) Moore, Tyler (Melissa) Bashaw, Corianne (Chris) Deatsman, Adam Bashaw, Joe Monette, and Stephanie Stewart; great-grandchildren - Aiden and Tristan Bashaw, Carlen, Carter, and Carissa Deatsman; sister - Gertrude Schmunk of Park Ridge, IL; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends - all of whom meant the world to her. Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edward, brother Kaare "Hank" Huse, and grandson C.J. Wrona.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Wednesday evening from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Parish Vigil Service and a time of sharing stories and remembrances will be held at 7:00 p.m. Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate her funeral Mass on Thursday, July 2, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Munising. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising. She will be escorted by her grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to be made to the Tendercare Activities Fund or Alger Parks and Rec's Concert in the Park series.
