Munising

Evelyn J. Madigan, age 77, of Munising, died Wednesday afternoon, April 26, 2017 at Harbour View Assisted Living in Munising.  She was born on November 6, 1939 in Munising to August and Margaret (Wilderspin) Koskela.  Growing up, she was one of the first girl hurdlers at Munising for track. She also was a really good hitter when playing softball and didn't miss at bat. Evelyn graduated from Wm. G. Mather High School in 1958.  On November 1, 1958, she married John “Jack” F. Madigan.  Evelyn was a homemaker and lovingly cared for her husband and children.  She was a baker for Hub’s Super Valu and attended Northern Michigan University.  Evelyn opened up a licensed day care out of her home and she cared for many children throughout the years.  She then became home health aide for LMAS.  Evelyn enjoyed going into people’s homes and assisting them with whatever needed to be done.

She was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Church where she was a member of St. Gerard Circle, helped with the funeral luncheon committee, and assisted wherever she could.  Evelyn was also a member of the National Catholic Society of Foresters.  She enjoyed quilting, gardening, and was a member of the Alger County Garden Club.  Evelyn was proud of her children and raised them to be independent strong people.  She was a special and humble woman.  Evelyn could be described as determined, protective, kind, gentle, accepting, and never judgmental.

She is survived by children -  John (Kristin) Madigan of Munising, Jeffrey (Kelly) Madigan of Hardwood, MI, Robert (Mary Pat) Madigan of Norway and Christine (Phillip) Johns of Ishpeming; eight grandchildren – Kathleen (Leo), Nickolay, Karina, David, Marc (Meg), Kelly Jo, Benjamin and Madigan; great-grandsons – Eddie and Jack; sister – Kathy Bogren of Virginia; sisters-in-law – Carol and Eloise Koskela; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband of over fifty-five years, Jack, who died on April 13, 2014; and brothers Robert and John Koskela.

Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising on Sunday evening from 5:00 until 7:00.  The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m.  Father Chris Gardiner will celebrate Evelyn’s Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
