Evelyn Jane (Smith) Miller, age 90, of Randolph Street, Grand Marais, died on Monday, July 14, 2008 at her home in Grand Marais. She was born on November 24, 1917 in York, Pennsylvania to Raymond and Margaret (Keller) Smith. Evelyn grew up in York, graduated from York High School in 1936, and then worked at Weist's Department Store. On October 21, 1939, she married Morrison "Mil" A. Miller, a teacher at Council Rock High School. They spent the next thirty years in the Newtown, Bucks County area of Pennsylvania, where they raised three children. When their youngest went to school, Evelyn was employed by Educational Testing Services of Princeton, New Jersey for over eighteen years, and became the departmental head of the Law Scholastic Aptitude Testing Center. Following Mil's retirement, they moved to Grand Marais, but enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Arizona. She and Mil were married over forty-seven years when he preceded her in death on August 24, 1987. Evelyn was an accomplished Bridge player for over fifty years, and an avid bowler for the ETS team. While spending time in Mesa, Arizona at Tower Point Resort, she was a librarian and the annual Ladies Pool Tournament scorekeeper. She enjoyed silversmithing, reading, crafts and cross stitching. She sold her needle work at Superior Arts and Crafts in Grand Marais, where she also kept their books.
Evelyn is survived by three children - Conni (Lee) Durrwachter of Grand Marais, David Miller of Warrington, PA, and Ann (Jan) Ballash of Frenchtown, NJ; three grandchildren - Nichol, Peytra, and Clinton; and four great-grandchildren, as well as one niece and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Mil, brother Donald K. Smith, sister Lorraine (Smith) Kissinger, and one nephew. Remembrance donations may be sent to the Marquette County Humane Society, the Alger County Animal Shelter in Munising, or to your local Humane Society.
