Munising & Shingleton
Faye D. Murray, age 87, of 410 Prospect Street, Munising, died on Monday, March 10, 2008 at the Munising Memorial Hospital at 6:20 p.m. Her lengthy illlness had not always been easy for Faye but her last hours were peaceful and surrounded by her family. Her final words were to make sure that her children and grandchildren knew that she loved them and she peacefully was reunited with her husband of 56 years and went home to the arms of her Lord. She was born the oldest of six children to William and Naomi (Bell) Denton on September 14, 1920 in McCaysville, Georgia. Faye was raised in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Georgia. During the Depression, Faye's mother died when she was only eleven and she became the primary caregiver of her siblings. Her father was away with work and they raised livestock and grew food on her grandfather's farm to survive. It was at that young age that Faye developed her pioneering spirit and independence that chartered the rest of her life. After the Depression and her siblings were older, Faye moved to Detroit and worked in an ammunitions factory during WWII. When the War was over, she made a trip to the U.P. and had a whirlwind courtship with Louis D. Murray. They were married on January 2, 1947 and moved to the Shingleton area where Louis was employed by the Luce South Shore & Atlantic Railroad. They had four children and Faye kept tabs on her children until the wee hours of the morning if necessary. She was the neighborhood parent and chauffeur as she drove children to and from wherever they needed to go during all kinds of weather. Faye was the original designated driver because Louis rarely drove anywhere. He would teasingly brag to Faye when he received his 25 and 30 year safe driver award from State Farm. She told him that he had 100 miles on his entire career of driving. After her children got older, she worked at the Old Munising Hospital and then Munising Memorial Hospital. She earned her Dietician certificate from Penn State and retired after 21 years in 1982 as the Supervisor Dietician. She made friends with many of the physicians and staff and was proud to have worked at the hospital. Louis retired in 1981 and they resided in the Shingleton area. They enjoyed playing cards, cooking for family and friends, and visiting with family and friends together. They moved to Graves Road and in the late 1980's a fire destroyed their home and family keepsakes. They then moved to Star Siding Road until health reasons had them relocate to Prospect Street in Munising where they lived with their grandson Brian and his wife Janelle. They were married over fifty-six years when Louis preceded Faye in death on January 13, 2003. Faye had many things in her life that she enjoyed: bird watching, gardening, sewing, knitting, reading, working puzzles, playing cards, cooking, canning, berry picking, picnicking and enjoying family and friends. Faye was the matriarch and center gathering point for her family.
She is survived by her children - Don (Dorine) Murray of Sun City West, AZ, Denise (Myron) Johnson of Skandia, and Louis (Karen) Murray of Sault Ste Marie, MI; grandchildren - Jodi (Mark) Cicci, Jason Murray, Myron Johnson, Jr., Keith (Brenda) Johnson, Andy Johnson, Brian (Janelle) Murray, Tricia (Glenn) Moore, and Shane Murray; great-grandchildren - Tyler Cicci - Darren, Alissa, and Grace Johnson, Heather, Josie, Megan, Teo, and Louis Ajay Murray - and Ariana, Sierra, Mariah, Glenn, and Vienna Moore; brothers - Bill Denton of Delaware and Bob Denton of New Jersey; numerous nieces and nephews; many cherished friends; and her beloved four legged companion - Jessie. Faye was preceded in death by her parents William and Naomi, her husband Louis, their infant son George, sister Irene, and brother Doyle.
Visitation will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. and on Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Pastor Jason LaFlamme will conduct Faye's funeral service in the funeral home's chapel on Friday, March 14, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.
