Munising
Floyd O. Makinen, age 73, of Munising, died on Monday morning, April 2, 2012 at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette where he had been for five years. He was born on July 8, 1938 in Forest Lake, Michigan to the late Oiva and Ellen (Ridell) Makinen. Floyd graduated from Eben High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps on December 10, 1956. He married Phyllis J. Vardon on March 16, 1957 and was honorably discharged from the Marines on December 17, 1958. Floyd worked at the Munising Foundry and at Jackson Tindle Sawmill before beginning employment at Kimberly Clark on February 29, 1960. He posted into the Finishing Room and progressed to Senior Roll Handler which was the job he held at his retirement on March 23, 1977 after completing seventeen years of service. Floyd was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a former member of the Moose Lodge. Floyd loved to fish. He enjoyed deer hunting without a bait pile and he enjoyed bird hunting. Floyd never came home empty handed. If he didn't have game, he brought home berries, wild rice, or wild cranberries.
He is survived by his wife of over fifty-five years - Phyllis Makinen of Munising; four children - Allen (Sheila) Makinen of Munising, Steven (Ruth Perry) Makinen of Forest Lake, Kathy (Brad) Kolbus of Munising, and John Makinen of Munising; grandchildren - Sarah and Kenny McCoy and Shalee and Ilyssa Makinen; step-grandchildren - Shannon and T.J. Lassila; great-grandchildren - Gianna, Savannah Rose, and Jersey May; brother - Keith Makinen of Munising; and numerous nieces and nephews. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents and brother Bill Korhonen.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Chris Gardiner on Monday, April 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church.
