Frieda M. Blackstock, age 75, of Forest Lake Road, AuTrain, died unexpectedly early Sunday evening, March 27, 2011 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born on September 30, 1935 in Birmingham, Michigan to the late Alfrido and Fortuna (Monti) Alessandri. Frieda grew up working on the family dairy farm and was a 1952 graduate from New Haven High School. She married Herbert N. Blackstock in November of 1952. Frieda raised her young family and as the children got older, she went to work at the Fair Haven Elementary School as a cook. She was so talented in the kitchen that the school lunch program's demand skyrocketed. Frieda worked as the Clerk for Ira Township for twenty-five years before retiring. Upon their retirement in 1998, she and Herb moved to AuTrain. Their son and daughter-in-law had purchased the Northern Nights Resort and they helped out on the resort however they could. Frieda was a fabulous cook and the family always ate well. She was always dedicated to her family and her children came first.
Frieda is survived by her husband of over fifty-eight years - Herbert Blackstock of AuTrain; son and daughter-in-law - Herb and Debbie Blackstock of AuTrain; twin daughters and sons-in-law - Yvonne and Jim Bonnici of Lake Orion, MI & Yvette and Ray Servick of Casco, MI; nine grandchildren - Herbie (Sarah), Wade, & Brent Blackstock, Jimmy, Michael & Tommy Bonnici and Joe (Ann), Andy (Tabitha) & Ben Servick; great-grandchildren - Emily, Ian, Malachi, Alora, Adyn, Kameryn & Destiny; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter Kathy, sister Barbara and brothers Johnny, Frankie and Danny.
Visiting time with family and friends will be held at the Bowerman Funeral Home on Friday, April 1, 2011 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Prayer services will be conducted at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising in the spring.
Because Frieda had such a love and passion for animals (especially her cats), memorials are requested to be made to the Alger County Animal Shelter in lieu of flowers.
