Gary Wayne "Joe" Monroe, age 71 of 8840N M-94 died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, January 4, 2010. Joe was born in Shingleton on February 9, 1938 the youngest of thirteen children to the late John and Rose (DesArmo) Monroe. He married Ruth Ann McClary on October 1, 1960, and together they raised their two sons. Joe and his family lived in Warren, MI for eleven years while working at General Motors before moving back to the U.P. in 1972. He worked as security at Timber Products for twenty-one years before he retired in 1993. In his retirement, Joe drove for Altran for three years; he enjoyed this because he always knew what was happening in town. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but the thing that was most important was his family. Joe loved his family, butting heads with his boys, playing with his grandchildren, or spending time with his wife of nearly fifty years, he loved them all very much.
Joe is survived by his wife - Ruth Monroe; son - Tim (Kathy) Monroe of Munising; daughter-in-law - Lori (Keith Zeller) Monroe of Munising; seven grandchildren - Danielle (Al), Kyle (Sarah), Tyler, James (Ashley), Marty (Dannielle), Ryan (Heather), and Brandon (Trisha); and four great-grandchildren - Drew, Destiny, Landen, and Cameron; sister - Susie Delome of Manistique; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son - Kim Monroe; parents - John and Rose; and eleven siblings.
Joe's visitation will be on Friday, January 8, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Bowerman Funeral Home, with the funeral service beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Chaplin Gerry Riley will conduct Joe's committal service on Tuesday, April 20, 2010 at Maple Grove Cemetery at 1:00 p.m
